It’s the perfect one day (or more) destination to enjoy with the family and friends: Fitzroy Island mixes relaxation with in-nature activities which will make your day.
There are operators offering 3 ferry transfers leaving from Cairns to Fitzroy Island at 9:00am, 11:00am and 1:30pm every day; and 3 return trips until 4:30pm.
Once you arrive to the island the first thing you should do is hire the snorkel gear, so you’re prepared for any good spot that may show up!
There are 2 great locations for snorkelling: the first one takes place when you walk left from the Welcome Bay; and the second one is just 20 minutes walk from the Bay, called Nudey Beach (don’t be afraid, it’s just a random name!).
In both spots you will find different tropical fish and colourful coral, and if you get lucky some turtles as well!
The island provides beautiful walking tracks with different grades of difficulty, through which you get to the Lighthouse, Nudey Beach, Secret Garden and Island Summit. You need to be a fit and healthy walker to undertake some of them, but you’ll have no issues going to Secret Garden and Nudey Beach; you could also run into some friendly and exotic bird or lizard!
The vegetation in the island is so dense that sometimes blocks whatever that’s more than 2 metres away from the path, which helps increase the surprise and wonder when arriving to Nudey Beach for example, and seeing the turquoise water for the first time. I guarantee an “Awwww” will come out of your mouth.
Other water activities include diving, kayaking, stand up paddle boards, paddle skis (last 3 are beach hire activities).
After a whole morning and afternoon of non-stop activities, it’s time to relax: either you choose to lay on the white sand for a warm sunbath or admire the sunset while enjoying some drinks at the Roxy’s Bar and Café, the island offers you a good-bye that will stay in your mind for ever.
